Do you need a Listserv?

Many people use address book nicknames in Outlook, Eudora Squirrelmail as a simple way to email multiple people at once. This works fine for five addresses, okay for a dozen, but beyond that, a list can become unwieldy.

People commonly use Bcc: (blind copy) in order to suppress the long list of addresses for multiple recipients without realizing that many spam filters will block email that does not have the recipient's address in the To: line.

If your group or organization routinely uses this method to communicate via email, you might want to consider getting a mailing list instead. Prairienet provides free list hosting to qualifying non-profit groups and organizations. As of October 2006, Prairienet hosts over 220 mailing lists and serves 38,000+ subscribers.

Prairienet's mailing list program, Mailman, can be flexibly configured to meet a variety of communication needs.

  • one-way newletter or announcements-only lists
  • open, public discussion lists for sports and hobby clubs
  • closed, private lists for boards, committees, project groups
  • moderated discussion or announcements list
Larger organizations find it convenient to have multiple lists, e.g. a moderated announcements list for the membership, a unmoderated, private lists for the board of directors and board committees, an open discussion list for the membership.
