Listservs & Newsgroups

Prairienet offers non-profit organizations and the community two powerful tools for group communications Mailman mailing lists (aka listservs or email discussion group) and USENET newsgroups.

For a brief overview of each, see below. For in-depth information, online applications and help, follow the links to the right.

Mailman mailing lists

Prairienet hosts over 200 listservs (aka mailing lists, email discussion groups) for a wide variety of non-profit organizations and groups both regionally and state-wide. Open discussion lists, private lists, moderated lists and one-way announcements lists. Prairienet runs the Mailman mailing list management program which offers fully Web-based tool for subscribers, listowners and the list site manager.

Mailman has many advanced features, such as automatic bounce processing, and content filtering, which make it easier to manage mailing lists and protect them from the onslaught of spam and virus-generated messages. List archives may be made fully searchable using the Webinator search engine.

Mailing lists are offered at no cost as a community service. Listowners are asked to distribute a fundraising appeal on behalf of Prairienet one or twice a year. [More about mailing lists]

Newsgroups

cmi derives from the designation for Willard Airport, ChaMpaIgn. cmi.* newsgroups are carried by news server news.ks.uiuc.edu as well as a number of local ISPs.
